🔍 Meaning of "As such"

“As such” means “in that capacity” or “therefore, given what has just been established.”
It’s a way to connect the reasoning you’ve just presented to a logical conclusion or consequence.

✅ When to Use It

Use “as such” when:

  • You’ve just explained a condition or situation.
  • And now you’re drawing a conclusion because of that situation.

cf)  Some writers now use as such to mean simply thus or therefore.

cf) However, for me at least, the colloquial use of “as such” to mean “therefore” is rarely a problem in less formal English.

🧠 Example:

The items do not meet the criteria of a retail set under GRI 3(b).
As such, they should be classified separately.

Translation:

Because they are not a retail set, therefore, they should be classified separately.

(+ More)
The production records show that the essential character of the goods was formed outside the FTA territories, and no substantial transformation occurred in Korea.
As such, the conditions set forth in the FTA are not met, and the goods cannot be deemed originating under KORUS. Consequently, the claim for preferential duty must be denied.

Because the items are not intended to be used together to meet a specific need or perform a common activity, they do not qualify as a "set" under GRI 3(b). As such, they should be classified separately based on their individual characteristics.

⚠️ Common Misuse

Some people mistakenly use "as such" to mean “for example” or “in that way”—which is incorrect. It should always refer back to a role, condition, or classification you’ve just described.
