1. save 

: If someone or something saves you from an unpleasant action or experience, they change the situation so that you do not have to do it or experience it.

(~ 덕분에 ... 하지 않아도 된다)

 

ex) The prize money saved her from having to find a job.

ex) If you phone for an appointment, it’ll save you waiting.

ex) Your tip saved me reinstalling Windows.

ex) Thanks for sending that letter for me—it saved me a trip.

 

2. spare

: to prevent (someone or something) from experiencing or being affected by something unpleasant, harmful, etc.

 

ex) He wanted to spare his family from the stress he had endured.

ex) Your tip spared me having to reinstall Windows.

ex) Please spare me the gruesome details.

 

3. so that S + V

: in order to make sth happen or be possible (~ 하기 위하여)

 

ex) He put his glasses on so that he could see the television better.

ex) All identifying information has been removed from this letter of complaint so that it can be used for training purposes.

ex) He wants the government to break up large corporations so that there is a level playing field for smaller companies.

ex) She swims every day so that she can stay healthy.

 

4. stay on top of

: to remain completely in control of, aware about, or on schedule with sth

 

ex) We'll stay on top of it, keep you posted.

ex) We need to stay on top of it.

ex) A : How is the new project going?

      B : Right on track! Jen has been staying on top of everything while you were on vacation.

ex) Apparently, things change so quickly in that world. So if they don't want to fall behind their competitors, they need to constantly stay on top of new and emerging technology.

 

5. strive

: to try very hard to do something or to make something happen, especially for a long time or against difficulties:

: If you strive to do something or strive for something, you make a great effort to do it or get it.

 

ex) He always strives to be ahead of others in his class.

ex) He strove to improve his French.

ex) The school constantly strives for excellence in its teaching.

ex) We strive to ensure that you are satisfied with your shopping experience here.
