1. mediocre

: if you describe sth as mediocre, you mean that it is of average quality but you think it should be better

 

ex) The critics dismissed him as a mediocre actor.

ex) Something has to stand out. There's no room for mediocre products.

ex) A mediocre product at best.

ex) I thought the play was only mediocre.

ex) The dinner was delicious, but the dessert was mediocre.

 

2. much less

: used to introduce sth as being even less likely than sth already mentioned

: The term "much less" is a phrase used to emphasize the improbability, unlikelihood, or implausibility of a secondary thing happening or being true when compared to a first thing. It is often used to underline that if the first thing is considered unlikely or unattainable, then the second thing is even more so. 
: (~ 은 더욱 아니다, (~이 아님)은 더 말할 것도 없다)

ex) Testing is inadequate to the task of identifying the extent of infeciton, much less reversing its spread.
ex) What woman would consider a date with him, much less a marriage?
ex) Despite millions of dollars and decades of research, scientists have made very little progress toward understanding what makes hair fall out, much less how to treat it. 
ex) The patient was alarmed by the callowness of the medical staff. The doctors looked too young to have graduated from high school, much less from medical school.

ex) He doesn't have enough time to watch a movie, much less read an entire book.
(This implies that if he doesn’t even have time for a relatively short activity like watching a movie, it’s even more unlikely that he will have time for a longer activity like reading a book.)

ex) I can't afford a car, much less a luxury sports car.
(This implies that if affording a regular car is already beyond the person's financial capacity, then affording a luxury sports car is even further out of reach.)

 

3. make friends with SB

: become somebody's friend

ex) Roger was new to the district but he soon made friends with other boys of his age.
ex) Simon finds it hard to make friends with other children. 
ex) In high school, I made friends with someone in Sweden, and we still exchange e-mails.
