D5. deliver / double / deter

1. deliver

: If you deliver something that you have promised to do, make, or produce, you do, make, or produce it.

 

ex) If you can't deliver improved sales figures, you are fired.

ex) The team delivered a stunning victory last night.

ex) The bilateral alliance has helped deliver stability and prosperity to northeast Asia.

ex) We gave her the job because we know she'll deliver. [=come through]

ex) He failed to deliver on his promise. [=he failed to do what he promised to do]

 

2. double
: when sth doubles or when you double it, it becomes twice as great in number, amount, or size

ex) The program will double the amount of money available to help pay for child care.
ex) Membership almost doubled in two years.
ex) Its spread is exponential: U.S. cases are doubling every fifth day.

ex) Thanks to my boss's outstanding expertise, he managed to double our team's revenue from what it was last year.

ex) My boss is exceptionally competent, and under his leadership, our team's revenue doubled compared to last year.

 

 

3. deter    (물주구문)
: To deter someone from doing something means to make them not want to do it or continue doing it.

: to stop sb from doing sth, by making them realize it will be difficult or have bad results.
: to prevent (something) from happening

ex) Her words of warning would hardly deter him.
ex) The high price of the service could deter people from seeking advice. 
ex) Supporters of the death penalty argue that it would deter criminals from carrying guns. 

ex) Painting the metal will deter rust. 

ex) Increased tariffs were implemented to deter the influx of cheap counterfeit goods.
ex) Enhanced surveillance at the border acts as a deterrent to potential smugglers trying to bypass import regulations.
ex) The heavy fines imposed by customs authorities are designed to deter businesses from evading trade standards.

ex) Strict customs regulations are put in place to deter illegal imports and protect domestic industries.

ex) Will this harsher punishment effectively deter criminals?

ex) People said he was foolish to start his own business, but he didn't let that deter him. 

ex) High prices are deterring a lot of young couples from buying houses.
