글맛을 살리는 3가지 수사법

I. 어순을 바꾸는 강조법: 도치

 

ex) 그는 하루 종일 한마디도 하지 않았다.

He did not utter a syllable for a day.

-> Not a syllable did he utter for a day.

 

ex) Seldom have I heard such wonderful music. (부정부사 강조)

ex) Relatively scarce is drinking water. (보어 강조)

ex) On the hill is a castle. (장소 부사구 강조)
ex) When a mother reads a book, so does her child more frequently.
ex) Were she my girlfriend, I would be really happy.
ex) Had you driven carefully, you would not have been in trouble.
ex) He has called into question the legitimacy of some experts' discretionary tactics used for the improvement of environment.
ex) Please find enclosed an application form and the company's job requirements information.
ex) To its east lies Japan, the former colonizer and cultural powerhouse that has been exciting Western imagination for decades. 
ex) And directly to the north looms the so-called Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which, thanks to its nuclear weapons program and bizarre, monarchical leadership, utterly overshadows South Korea in the world's media.
ex) At its heart is a belief that humans are improvable through cultivation and moral action, and that collectively, a harmonious society can be created when all members fulfill certain obligations.

(이것의 핵심은 ~ 라는 믿음이다)

ex) Not only is the setting of Korea's political tradition atypical, but the results might be called unexpected.

(한국 정치 전통의 조성 환경은 이례적일 뿐 아니라, 그 결과도 예측불허라고 말할 수 있을지 모른다)

ex) She failed to use these advantages to solve the political, economic, or military problems of the nation in the initial decades of Western contact. Nor have they seemed to be decisive help in easing her path since.

II. 간결한 문형을 만드는 동격

 

ex) My friend, Brian, has just found a job.

ex) I did not have the intention of bothering you.

ex) I forgot the fact that you had married him.

ex) Although commodity prices skyrocketed, demand outpaced supply, a problem solved by the government's active interventions. 
(비록 상품 가격은 치솟았지만 수요가 공급을 앞질렀고, 이 문제는 정부의 적극적인 개입으로 해결되었다.)

 

ex) He continued his experiments with nitrogen, one that resulted in the explosion in his house.

(그는 질소를 이용한 실험을 계속했는데, 이 실험으로 인해 그의 집에서 폭발이 일어났다.)

ex) Colonialism had spawned both an active and passive Korean resistance, including numerous nationalist groups, both in Korea and abroad, each with its own history, personal connections, and political agenda.

 

ex) It had also created a variety of collaborators: Koreans who had openly and enthusiastically supported Japanese rule, those who had unwillingly acquiesced, and a whole range of people in between. 

 

ex) Confucianism is not a religion but rather a system of moral philosophy that originated in the teachings of Kong Fuzi, a thinker known in the West as Confucius.

 

III.  군더더기를 없애는 생략법

 

의미만 통한다면 서술어, 보어, 주어, 부정사구 등 다양한 성분이 생략될 수 있다.

 

ex) Peter is going to take the train and Brian the bus. 
ex) John seems busy, and Mike certainly is. 
ex) You can eat the pizza if you want to. 
ex) That he fell in love with a new girl is not surprising; that he married the girl is (surprising).
